What to Know about Sicily Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean. It is rich in history and has beautiful natural landscapes. Palermo is the regional capital of Sicily, the Archbishop's residence and fifth city of Italy. It retains numerous accounts of invasions and occupations of Arab and Norman civilizations. Not far is Monreale, 8 km south-west of the city and about 11 km to the famous beach of Mondello and an elegant seaside resort.
Sicily is also surrounded by beautiful islands such as the Aeolian Islands, the Egadi and finally the Pelagie. In the regional park is the active volcano Mt Etna which draws many tourists each year.
